Physical Education
PE Curriculum:
Each child in the school receives a minimum of 60 minutes of PE each week. This is normally split between two 30 minute slots over the course of each week. Class teachers collaborate together to ensure at least 5 of the 6 PE strands are taught each year.
The strands of the PE curriculum are:
- Athletics
- Dance
- Games
- Gymnastics
- Outdoor and Adventure
- Aquatics
The PE curriculum can be accessed on this link https://www.curriculumonline.ie/primary/curriculum-areas/physical-education/
Throughout the year, external coaches came to give more enriching PE experiences for our pupils. These complement the lessons taught by class teachers and ensure our pupils get a well-rounded education. All teachers have access to the PSSI Move Well, Move Often resources. Teachers also utilise PDST resources to teach fundamental movement skills as part of the PE curriculum. Each teacher ensures that each PE lesson is accessible to all pupils.
Priority Strand: Games As part of the Active School initiative, the staff decided to prioritise the games strand for the duration of the year. It was decided that games would be incorporated into as many whole-school events as possible. Many examples of how we focused on games this year can be seen in the ‘Physical Activity’ section and throughout our Active Flag Section.
