From May 6th-9th we celebrated Active Schools Week here in Ballyheada National School. Thankfully the weather was on our side and we had an absolutely incredible week. During active schools week we endeavoured to prioritise physical activity throughout our school day and also at home through engaging in active homework!The final day of our Active School Week also saw the culmination of our Skip Around Europe Challenge where our pupils partook in a whole school skipathon and showcased their incredible skills which they have worked on over the past four weeks! A special thank you to our active schools committee members for organising the most memorable week in conjunction with their teachers.
Throughout the week we engaged in the following activities:
- Wake Up Shake up every morning from 8:50am – 9:05am. This involved our whole school partaking in a light full body warm each morning followed by a whole school dance or team building activity!
- Music on yard every morning.
- Active Breaks during teaching time.
- Active lessons as much as possible.
- Our 'Walk a Mile and Smile' proved hugely popular! Our senior pupils were paired with a junior pupil and they walked around the yard getting to know each other!
- All active homework was assigned for the week.
- Monday saw a dodgeball tournament involving pupils from 3rd-6th class along with teachers!
- Wednesday was our senior classes sports afternoon and Thursday saw our junior classes following suit with their sports day!
- The Active Schools committee lead an initiative titled 'Drop Everything and Dance Time’ on Tuesday, The committee members rang the school bell at a pre agreed time each day and when this was heard, everyone Dropped everything and Danced!
- Every class engaged in Active Walkway Lessons on Thursday and Friday.
- Friday was Take Over Day where we focused on skipping in the yard all day. Our whole school skipathon took place which filled our school yard with such a positive feeling of fun and happiness
- On Friday afternoon the staff took on 6th class in a 'Teacher vs Pupil' challenge which wrapped up our Active Schools week for 2025!
