5th and 6th Class Explore Goggins' Hill Tunnel

6th Jun 2025

Our 5th and 6th Class pupils, along with Mrs. Horgan, Ms. Murphy, and Ms. Mairéad, enjoyed a very interesting and informative guided walk through Goggins Hill Tunnel, led by John O’Sullivan (grandad of Oisín, Emma, Cian and Cara).

The tunnel, located near Ballinhassig, is the longest disused railway tunnel in the Republic of Ireland—stretching an impressive 830 metres! It was built between January 1850 and December 1851 by over 300 workers. There are exciting plans to transform it into a Greenway in the future.

A big thank you to John for giving up his time to share his wonderful knowledge with us. We’re very grateful for the chance to explore such a fascinating part of our local history!
